Bill has been carving Oamaru limestone since 2009 and has been displaying his sculptures at various galleries in the region including most recently, Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom in Foxton. He is also a regular exhibitor and stone carving demonstrator at the annual Otaki Festival of Pots and Garden Art.
All his sculptures are designed to be suitable for exterior use but some clients prefer them inside the house and three clients have had both. The sculptures when maintained will look good for at least 10 years and are built to withstand the strong Wellington winds. His sculptures can be found throughout New Zealand and overseas in Canada, USA, UK.
He welcomes undertaking commissioned sculptures telling the client's story in sculpture. This may how they came to New Zealand, family members or just telling the story of their family. They start by coming to the workshop in Ōhau, where they can pick the best piece of driftwood for base of their sculpture, then decide on the number and size of the birds. The piece of sculpture Bill creates is totally unique to the client and tells their special story.
One commissioned piece had the mother and father birds and 5 smaller birds of differing sizes based on the current heights of their children. It was a very personal birthday present from the parents of the mother telling their family story.
